CERTIFIED WORK. My work is certified now. Anyone who owns one of my paintings has a certified piece of art.
To begin with, there is tremendous abuse in the "certificate of authenticity" or COA business, especially at online auctions, particularly on eBay. Unless a certificate of authenticity originates from and is signed by either the artist, the publisher of the art (in the case of limited editions), a confirmed dealer or agent of the artist (not a third party or reseller), or an acknowledged expert on the artist, that certificate is pretty much meaningless. A legitimate COA must contain specific details about the art such as when and how it was produced, the names of people or companies involved in it's production, the art's exact title, dimensions, and the names of reference books or similar resources that contain either specific or related information about either that work of art or the artist. It should also state the qualifications AND FULL CONTACT INFORMATION of the individual or entity that authored the certificate, and include his or her complete and current contact information.
FREE AS A BIRD! Well sort of. I have collage for a long time now, followed the guides, entered the shows, taught, judged shows, and now well... I feel like breaking all the rules. I want to collage with complete freedom. I want to let my mind fly with the exquisite knowledge that I can break new ground. Try new things in the collage realm. So we will see what happens. Hopefully soon I will have something new to post here for all to see. Hopefully something interesting and different.
2008...As this year begins I embark on a new series. I am both excited and nervous as I challenge myself again to complete interesting and strong collages, technically and artisticly. Continuing to get my message across but also make the composition strong from all stand points. An artist is always challenged with this task. Also there is the fear of the white paper. I am sure many of you artists out there reading this have experienced it. Looking at the beautiful clean white surface, knowing the expanse of it, the cost of it, makes it hard to put even one stroke on the paper. It is like diving into the pool the first time. Do you jump? Or not? Breaking the perfect plane, will it be disaster or not one asks oneself? Just remember it is small steps. One stroke leads to another, to another, then suddenly the painting takes on a life of it's own. Guiding you in the direction that is right. Listen to your gut, your heart, step away from it, look at it from across the studio. It will tell you what it wants and needs. Your job is to listen, interpret, listen again and then, THEN, know when to stop. When it stands on it's own as a completed work you are done!
